Doctrine of Lesser Magistrate

The doctrine of the Lesser Magistrate is the biblical concept seen in the book of Daniel (among others) in which the God-fearing man or woman appeals to lesser authorities to protect them against the tyranny of higher authorities. When all appeals to human authority are exhausted or untenable, we must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). This leaves room for defense of oneself, family, etc. The early patriots flew flags with this concept in mind. The “pine tree flag” with the motto “An Appeal to Heaven” is a reflection of the idea that we must obey God rather than men, even if that means resistance to tyrants.

Romans 13 affirms obedience to magistrates in so much as they administer godly laws, promoting good and punishing evil. When kings, presidents, law enforcement, et al step outside these boundaries, they are no longer legitimate magistrates and must be resisted and eventually deposed should they not turn from their oppressive executive action.

A group of God-fearing men are recognizing that law enforcement is not always able to protect families in times of need. Thus, we are organizing modern “Minutemen” to come to one another’s aid in the event of riots, tyranny, et al. We are not a militia, nor are we an offensive force. We merely desire to support one another for home defense in the event of danger. Scripture provides neither provision for nor prohibition of professional law enforcement. However, Scripture does require that men provide for their families (1 Timothy 5:8). This provision includes protection from harm. Thus, we advocate for personal and cooperative defense against danger.
